Using Essential Oils on Kids and Pets

Essential oils are excellent to use on and around our kids and pets. However, we need to make sure that we only use a brand that is very high quality. The company that creates these oils needs to take proper care in every single step of creating this oil.... from preparing the soil where the plants grow to the bottling of the oil. That is why I only use and recommend the Young Living brand on this blog site.

So, let me give you a few examples of how and when I've used essential oils with my kids, our cat, and our dog. I was introduced to Young Living's oils in 2007 and have never looked back! Their quality surpasses any other brand I've come in contact with over the years.

When my daughter was little, she would get sick quite a bit. I remember she had been given her regular vaccines and, when she was 2, I had the doctor give her half the dose of the flu shot. These shots did not help her stay healthy; in fact, it appeared to make her health decline. I would go to the store and get over the counter Tylenol brand type things to help her, but every single month she was sick for about 3 weeks and her cold would go way down deep into her chest and she was very irritable. She couldn't sleep well at night. It was crazy. When I found out about Young Living oils, I decided to rub a blend called R.C on her chest and back, praying God would heal her through these natural products. Lo and behold, they truly enhanced her health! I noticed that she wouldn't get sick very often anymore, and when she did, the symptoms were extremely mild and would go away very quickly once I used the oils on her to support her immune system. No more OTC meds for her ever again!

An oil that I loved having around when my daughter was 3 and 4 was a blend called Peace and Calming. I noticed that every time I applied a drop on her feet when she was having a temper tantrum in the car she would calm right now within a few minutes. It was also worked great one summer when my husband was trying to get his boys (my teenage stepkids) to calm down and go to sleep so he could go to bed himself.

My daughter really wanted a kitty, so we got her a little yellow and white tabby when she was about 3. This little kitty was sick... you could tell because of her runny nose and watery eyes. I noticed that when I diffused that R.C in my daughter's room and kitty was in there, she liked the calming scent and her runny nose was relieved. I realized after a few days that this oil blend was enhancing her health! Now our cat is 6 years old... Last night I diffused Eucalyptus Radiata oil in the living room, where she was sleeping with our dog, and they absolutely loved the peaceful scent. Plus, I knew this oil was supporting their respiratory system.

A few months later, at Christmas time, we got my son the dog he’d been wanting. She had to be operated on so as not to have babies, so they sutured her up, gave me some antibiotics, and told me the sutures would be gone in a matter of a week or two. I got home, threw away the antibiotics since I knew the dangerous side effects of these drugs in my own life and didn’t want my pets exposed to them either, and I started applying a drop of Frankincense around the wound every day and night. The first time it seemed to be a bit painful, as it was a fresh wound, but after that, she was calm as can be when I applied the Frankincense on her. She never tried to scratch the wound, interestingly enough and it healed nicely. However, two weeks passed and the sutures didn’t disappear as they said they would. So, I took her to the place from which I adopted her and they saw her immediately. Turns out they had put in the wrong sutures and if I hadn’t brought her in, they would have never come out! They said these sutures could have been very dangerous to her because they would have oxidized in her, but that I had taken extremely good care of her. I smiled and thanked them for taking them out, and left. I knew right then that God had taught me a lesson in trust by having me throw away the antibiotics and simply applying Frankincense around her wound daily.

As my kids grow up, they got some of their favorites. Whenever their stomach isn’t feeling too good, they reach for the TummyGize blend of oil for soothing comfort that is supportive of their digestion - my son just grabs it, and my daughter willingly takes it from me when I offer it to her. For immune support, my daughter likes the smell of Lemon the most. When she starts getting a bit of a cough, I diffuse a blend called Raven, which supports her health and has a very soothing scent. My son loves the scent of Christmas Spirit in his diffuser because it puts him in the Christmas mood right away; he also likes the scent of Shutran as a cologne.

Whenever I diffuse oils, or my kids do, I know that it’s safe for our pets as well. I never have to worry about possible reactions. They have all grown up with oils and absolutely love them. These oils create a healing environment in our home, for which I am very grateful. Paired with great supplements and good nutrition, along with other healthy habits, my kids stay healthy all year long; if they do get sick, their symptoms are extremely mild and the sickness doesn’t last long at all. We don’t resort to any prescription or over the counter medications ever, not even Tylenol, aspirin or Ib Profen. I live under the motto that we need to support our immune system not simply counter symptoms, which are only indicators of a bigger underlying problem we must address.

This is very true. That is my one desire and goal as well, to please Him and bring Him glory, way less of me and so much more of Him.
